After being named in the New Zealand eight for the 1980 Olympics and then having the disappointment of not competing because of the American-led boycott that year, Robertson had his moment of Olympic glory at Los Angeles in 1984 when he won a coxless four gold medal.
Robertson won a world title with the New Zealand coxed four at Duisburg in 1983, to go with the world championship silver medal he won with the New Zealand eight at Bled in 1979.
Eric Verdonk and Robertson teamed to win three consecutive national double sculls titles for the North Shore club, from 1987-89. He was also part of a national champion fours team in 1983.
Robertson shifted from Auckland to Warkworth to help run the family boat building business. He is married to Sarah and they have three children. Sarah is the brother of Paralympian Ben Lucas.
