New Zealand’s sole Olympic judo representative, Moira de Villiers, lost in the first round of the 70kg division today.
De Villiers, 22, was beaten 1-0 on yuko (accumulated penalties) by German Kerstin Thiele after a tough and relatively even contest.
The loss signalled the end of de Villiers’ Olympic campaign. She had been seeking a win to move into the quarter-finals.
