Over the last 6 months I have been fortunate to be involved with the Waikato/Bay of Plentys bid to become the cycling centre of Excellence in New Zealand. It has been a very competitive process where 7 regions have competed against each other for the right to become the home of Bike NZ and secure $7 million of SPARC funding.

Waikato/BOP are currently the preferred Tender and we are really excited by all that the region has to offer. I know the massive amount of volunteer time and effort that has gone into our proposal, and I can only imagine the other bids were all the same.
Unfortunately although there will only be one centre, it has been very positive to see the passion for this project amongst our communities and how people have really wanted to do the best thing for NZ Sport and their regions.

At the end of this competitive process, I really hope we can all work together to achieve great results for NZ cycling and social and health benefit of our communities.
